Breaking In & Leveling Up: Lessons Learned from MedTech Leaders

In our latest MedTech Unplugged webinar, we had the privilege of learning from Beji George, Head of Global Strategy and Therapy Development at Acarix, who drew on 25 years of experience to share how to build—and sustain—a successful career in MedTech. His lessons went far beyond résumés and interviews. They focused on the mindset and habits that separate thriving professionals from the rest. Here are some of his pearls of wisdom.

Lead with Curiosity

As Beji stressed, curiosity is more than a personality trait—it’s a career strategy. The most successful MedTech professionals constantly ask questions: What does this role really require? How does this company innovate? Where can I contribute? By approaching each step with curiosity, you not only learn faster but also uncover opportunities others overlook. (As Cambridge University Press explains, curiosity fuels both innovation and personal growth.)

Build Genuine Connections

Networking isn’t about collecting contacts; it’s about building real relationships. Reaching out to people in roles you aspire to, asking thoughtful questions, and actively listening creates connections that last. These authentic interactions often turn into mentorships that can guide your career and open doors when you least expect it. (See Harvard Business Review’s guide on successful networking for more strategies.)

Create Value Every Day

The professionals who stand out are the ones who consistently bring value—whether through fresh ideas, unique perspectives, or simply being reliable teammates. Moving beyond a 9-to-5 mindset and asking, How can I add value today? is a habit that accelerates growth and makes you indispensable. (AdvaMed offers a strong overview of the MedTech industry where this mindset is critical for growth.)

Invest in Mentorship

MedTech is a small world. The relationships you build today often resurface later in your career. Staying connected with mentors and peers gives you a steady source of advice and, in time, allows you to give back as well. (National Library of Medicine offers a strong case for this ongoing practice, which, in the MedTech industry this mindset is critical for growth.)

Be a “Good Hang”

Technical expertise matters, but people also want to work with—and promote—colleagues they enjoy being around. Being approachable, authentic, and a good listener makes you the kind of teammate others want by their side. Sometimes, simply being someone others enjoy working with is the differentiator that moves your career forward.

The takeaway: Breaking in and leveling up in MedTech requires more than skills. It’s about cultivating curiosity, building authentic connections, creating daily value, and nurturing relationships over time—all while staying true to yourself.
